Title: Lady Helen Finds Her Song
Author: Jennifer Moore
Publisher: Covenant Communications, Inc.
This is a charming love story set in 1813. Lady Helen Poulter has traveled to India with her mother and step-father. On arrival, she finds everything about the country fascinating. She quickly comes to admire the people, places and events of India. Her fellow Brits are not so kind in their thoughts and attitudes toward this country. They find them to be heathens, the climate unbearable and the country disease ridden. They make Lady Helen feel inferior for her fascination with and enjoyment of her newfound culture. She finds a kindred spirit in Captain Michael Rhodes. He is a British citizen who was born in India, schooled in England and then returned to India via service in the army. He has always found India to be home to him. He also finds Lady Helen has quickly stolen his heart, but is he too old for her? Is there any way he can compete with the younger, handsome Lieutenant Arthur Bancroft for Lady Helen’s heart? Are they destined to remain only friends?
I loved the setting of this story and watching Lady Helen learn her place in this new culture as well as learning to make decisions about her life. The political climate and how to navigate through it as well as 1800 society was interesting. The writing is crisp, vivid and clear, making me feel like I was right there alongside Lady Helen in India. Lady Helen and Michael were wonderful characters that were genuine; there was nothing artificial or fake about them. This was my first time reading this author and I look forward to reading more from her pen.
